After 78 days of air strikes on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, land-based troops entered the action. On 12 June 1999, the Leclerc Multinational Brigade North led by General Cuche entered Kosovo from Macedonia (Kumanovo) under the UN resolution 1244.

The code name "Trident" was given to the operations carried out by the French Army in Kosovo. The first units there were made up of several companies of armoured personnel carriers (VAB) and a light armoured cavalry division of around twelve AMX 10 RC. After 78 days of air strikes on the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, land-based troops entered the action. Almost 6000 French soldiers saw action in Kosovo in the first year, then their numbers were progressively reduced.
